The Explusion Of Civil Disobedience, By Henry David Thoreau

Attitudes towards the powers that regulate and control society have fluctuated throughout history. Modern dystopian Novels like 1984 and The Giver contrast highly to the Shakespearean tales of the Monarchs. In today’s world, the freedom of speech is becoming a higher priority and the readiness to challenge institutions of governments is shifting itself into the mindsets of the masses. However, instances of this right were required by history to be broken through its shell. This legacy takes the name of Civil Disobedience as written about by Henry David Thoreau. Merriam-Webster defines Civil Disobedience as: â€Å"a refusal to obey governmental demands or commands especially as a nonviolent and usually collective means of forcing concessions†¦show more content†¦He protected this idea of an extra legal responsibility in the civil rights movement until his very last heartbeat. He gained more power at this time than the president and all of the policemen, and never once used hard force but rather used nonviolence as a compass in the right direction. Following in Dr. Kings teaching 10 years after his assassination, Cesar Chavez wrote the article â€Å"He Showed Us the Way.† Chavez has gone down in history for fighting for Labour rights after years of seeing migrant workers being mistreated throughout America. In his article, while he protects the moral standings of Dr. King, he also brings light to the logistical reasoning behind it. He watched many of his activists become angry, frustrated and at times, violent. To respond to this he recites two major points, â€Å"If...we respond with nonviolence, we attract people’s support† and â€Å"Who gets killed in the case of violent revolution? The poor, the workers. The people†¦Ã¢â‚¬ He believed that his moral standing was critical to keep the American Citizens on his side and that non-violence would protect his people from repeating the past. His critical thought led his activists into protests and strikes that remained so successful, Labour Unions have co ntinued under his name ever since. We can see an example of Chavez’s first claim by looking at a Radio Transcript from June 16 of this year titled: â€Å"Fact Check: Is Left-Wing Violence Rising† where one

Night Creature Crescent Moon Chapter 28 Free Essays

â€Å"Luc!† The sitter burst out the front door, pausing when she saw the three of us nearby. â€Å"I’m sorry, Mr. Adam, he slipped away again. We will write a custom essay sample on Night Creature: Crescent Moon Chapter 28 or any similar topic only for you Order Now † Hurrying forward, she scooped Luc into her arms. â€Å"You’re like an eel, boy.† â€Å"Bye,† Luc said as she turned and carried him back to the trailer. The child cast curious glances at me the entire way. â€Å"You don’t belong here,† Adam said. His words hurt, but I was determined not to show it. â€Å"I know.† â€Å"I’ll take you home.† â€Å"To Boston?† â€Å"Would you go?† â€Å"No.† â€Å"There isn’t a loup-garou, Diana. You’re wasting your time. If you stay, someone’s going to get hurt.† â€Å"People are dying. What’s killing them, Adam? You?† â€Å"What if I was?† I blinked. â€Å"I – uh – what?† â€Å"What if I was killing them?† â€Å"You said there wasn’t a wolf.† â€Å"Exactly. So it must be a person.† â€Å"But†¦ the police found proof of an animal killing people.† â€Å"Then it’s an animal, which means it isn’t me.† â€Å"Unless you’re the loup-garou.† â€Å"I’m not a wolf.† â€Å"Yet you disappear under every crescent moon.† â€Å"I don’t disappear. I stay at my shack.† â€Å"Why?† â€Å"Things happen under that moon.† He took a deep breath. â€Å"I mean things have happened. To me, in de army. I try not to remember, but – â€Å" He let the breath out and his shoulders slumped. I wanted to touch his hair, hold his hand, but I knew he wouldn’t let me. â€Å"Luc was wrong,† he said. â€Å"I don’t like de crescent moon; I despise it.† â€Å"What happened?† Instead of answering, he took my arm and half-led, half-dragged me to the ancient Chevy parked in the driveway. The thing appeared to be at least forty years old. A little restoration would do wonders, just like the mansion. Right now the car was a mess – rusted, blotchy, no true color to speak of. Adam opened the passenger door and I balked. â€Å"Get in,† he said through gritted teeth, â€Å"or I will make you.† I glanced at the trailer. Luc waved from the window. I got in the car, wincing when a busted spring thumped me in the ass. The seat was badly torn, as if an animal had clawed it apart. The car was so old, it didn’t have air-conditioning. In a near-synchronized movement, we rolled down the windows. The morning was already hot enough that the wind felt good in my hair. â€Å"I’m not gonna tell you what happened,† Adam murmured. â€Å"I can’t† The â€Å"can’t† stopped me. I understood that special ops were a secret. â€Å"What happened to your wife?† His fingers tightened on the wheel. â€Å"She’s gone.† â€Å"How?† I imagined terrible things – things that had put the shadows in his eyes. Was this why he couldn’t love me? Death was something I understood. â€Å"Packed up her stuff, cleaned out our bank accounts, and ran. The bitch.† I gaped. â€Å"What? She’s dead.† â€Å"I hope so.† â€Å"Luc said his mother was dead.† â€Å"She is to me. To him, too.† His gaze shifted to mine, then back to the road. â€Å"She isn’t coming back, if that’s what you’re worried about.† â€Å"I’m worried about your sanity. Why would you tell your child his mother is dead when she – ?† â€Å"Took off. Abandoned him. Left when he was not much more than a year old and never came back. She didn’t want him. She hates him almost as much as she hates – â€Å" His mourn snapped closed over the last word. But I could figure it out. His wife hated him. I doubted he’d tell me why. â€Å"You didn’t see her again?† â€Å"Nope.† â€Å"Didn’t hear from her?† â€Å"Zap.† â€Å"So you’re still married.† â€Å"Not in my mind.† â€Å"Terrific,† I muttered. â€Å"If I don’t know where she is, how can I send her the divorce papers?† He had a point. Still – â€Å"It was never a real marriage,† he insisted. â€Å"You got a license?† â€Å"Yeah.† â€Å"Then it was real.† â€Å"I never loved her. She never loved me. We got married because†¦Ã¢â‚¬ He shrugged and I understood. â€Å"You couldn’t keep it in your pants. What a shock.† Silence settled over the interior of the car. But I was unable to remain quiet for long. â€Å"Why did you tell me you couldn’t have children?† â€Å"I can’t. Not anymore. After Luc I – † He fell silent, as if he could no longer find the words. I had no such trouble. â€Å"You were in an accident? Caught the mumps? What?† â€Å"I had a vasectomy.† My mouth fell open. I seemed to have that problem a lot lately. â€Å"Why?† â€Å"I don’t make de same mistake twice.† â€Å"But – What if you met someone? Wanted more children?† â€Å"I won’t.† My chest hurt, as if someone were pounding on it with a lead pipe, trying to break my heart. â€Å"You can’t know that,† I managed. â€Å"I will never marry again. Never have another child. It’s de way things are.† I never planned to marry again, either, knew with utter certainty I’d never love anyone the way I’d loved Simon. I hadn’t wanted a baby with him; I definitely didn’t want one with anyone else. So why did Adam’s words bother me so much? Because I smelled a lie in there somewhere; I just wasn’t sure where. Perhaps it was the lie of omission. He had another life, a family I didn’t even know about And if he’d lied about that, he’d probably lied about something else. â€Å"Why didn’t you tell me about Luc?† â€Å"My life in de swamp is different from my life with my son.† I stiffened. â€Å"And I’m part of your life in the swamp? How flattering.† â€Å"Diana, you don’t understand – â€Å" â€Å"I think I do. You don’t want your precious son being contaminated by the trampy woman you’re screwing.† His jaw tightened. â€Å"That isn’t what I said.† â€Å"You don’t have to.† I crossed my arms and stared out the window. â€Å"I’ll do anything to keep Luc from being hurt.† I shot him a glare. â€Å"You think I’d hurt him?† â€Å"Not on purpose. But – † He lifted his hand from the steering wheel, then lowered it. â€Å"He wants a mother. I can’t give him one.† â€Å"You could.† â€Å"No,† he said with cold finality. â€Å"You plan on stayin’, cher? You want a ready-made family? A little cabin in de swamp? Drive a car pool? Make bag lunches? Soccer games and Little League?† When I hesitated, he nodded. â€Å"That’s what I thought. So I keep him away. Why get his hopes up? He’s gonna have a hard enough life as it is.† â€Å"Why is his life going to be hard?† â€Å"That’s just de way Me is.† â€Å"You know the future?† â€Å"Sometimes I think I do.† I stared at him as he stared out the windshield. â€Å"You say the strangest things.† â€Å"I don’t want you to tell anyone about him.† I spread my hands wide. â€Å"Who would I tell?† â€Å"No one knows he’s my son. I want to keep it that way. People around here, they think I’m nuts.† â€Å"I wonder why,† I said dryly. He ignored me. â€Å"Luc should have as normal of a life as possible.† â€Å"Why wouldn’t he?† â€Å"My Me isn’t normal.† â€Å"It could be.† â€Å"No. I have responsibilities. Things I have to do – â€Å" A thought broke through my confusion. â€Å"Are you still in the army? Some super secret agent crap?† â€Å"No,† he said shortly. â€Å"What, exactly, do you do?† He didn’t bother to answer, which only made me more suspicious. But his next words hurt so much, I forgot all about that. â€Å"I don’t want you to see Luc again.† â€Å"Fine,† I snapped. I didn’t plan on seeing Adam again, either. Just because I didn’t want children didn’t mean I was going to take kindly to being told I wasn’t allowed near one. Adam was making me feel bad, and I already felt bad enough. He turned off the main road and slowed at the sight of a car parked in front of the mansion. Cassandra sat on the porch. As we pulled up she stood, hand raised to shield her eyes from the bright morning sunlight. I glanced at my watch. Seven forty-five. Damn, I’d told her I’d call by 7:00 A.M. and let her know I was okay. I was surprised Detective Sullivan wasn’t here, too. â€Å"Who is that?† Adam murmured. â€Å"Cassandra.† â€Å"She don’t look like a voodoo priestess.† â€Å"Exactly what does a voodoo priestess look like?† â€Å"Hell if I know.† Cassandra’s face flooded with relief when she saw me. Her gaze went to Adam, and her eyebrows shot up. I’m sure he had that effect on all the women. I climbed out of the car. â€Å"Sorry. I forgot to call.† â€Å"I can see why.† I turned to introduce Adam, and he drove away. I was left gaping at the taillights of his Chevy. Sure, I’d planned to blow him off, but he hadn’t even given me the chance. â€Å"Antisocial much?† Cassandra murmured. â€Å"You have no idea.† â€Å"What happened last night?† â€Å"He isn’t the loup-garou,† I blurted. Her only reaction was a slight lifting of her dark eyebrows. â€Å"How do you know?† â€Å"I touched him with your knife, and he didn’t explode.† â€Å"Not into flames anyway.† â€Å"What’s that supposed to mean?† She smirked. â€Å"You had sex.† â€Å"See that in your crystal ball?† â€Å"Didn’t have to. I can tell by the way you watched him go.† â€Å"Hell,† I mattered. â€Å"Isn’t it? So where were you?† I opened my mouth to tell her, then remembered Adam’s admonition about Luc. Not that I’d promised anything. Not that I owed Adam anything. Not that Cassandra was any type of threat. Then again I had no idea whom I could trust and whom I couldn’t I’d thought Adam and I had something – if not love, well, at least lust and extreme like. Discovering he had a son, that he was, technically, married, had shaken my confidence. Go figure. Having him say he didn’t want me near his child hurt But I wasn’t going to make myself feel any better by telling Cassandra. I don’t think anything would make me feel better. â€Å"Diana?† Cassandra pressed. â€Å"Where were you?† â€Å"His place.† â€Å"In the swamp.† I nodded. We had been, most of the time. I remembered something else about Luc – he wasn’t supposed to exist. I’d found no record of his birth at all. Had I missed it? Had it been lost, stolen, misplaced? I was so confused. The sound of vehicles turning off the main highway made both Cassandra and I glance up. A delivery truck and an unmarked police car rattled down the driveway. â€Å"Sullivan,† Cassandra murmured. She didn’t sound pleased. â€Å"Ms. Malone.† He nodded at me, then Cassandra. â€Å"Priestess.† He put a sarcastic twist on the title and Cassandra’s eyes narrowed. â€Å"You better watch it or she’ll turn you into a toad,† I said. â€Å"Wish I could,† Cassandra murmured. Sullivan didn’t appear worried. â€Å"I’d be happy to call you Miss, Mrs., or Ms. if I knew your last name.† â€Å"You mean you haven’t been able to uncover that information with your superior detecting skills?† Cassandra asked. â€Å"I’ve been a little busy.† â€Å"What is your last name?† I asked. â€Å"I don’t need one. ‘Priestess Cassandra’ sets me apart. It isn’t as if there are two in town.† I tilted my head. She didn’t want to tell me. How interesting. I never would have thought Cassandra had something to hide. Maybe everyone did. â€Å"Which one of you is Malone?† the deliveryman asked. â€Å"Me.† I took the clipboard he offered and signed next to my name. The stuff from Frank had arrived. Thank goodness. In less than a week the crescent moon would rise and now I’d be ready. â€Å"What’s that?† Sullivan asked as the delivery guy unloaded a cart with a long, thin box atop two shorter fatter ones. â€Å"Cage, tree stands, tranquilizer gun.† â€Å"You got a permit for that?† I stopped in the middle of opening the box on the top. â€Å"I was told the gun laws in Louisiana are†¦ lenient.† Sullivan scowled. â€Å"You got that right. But trapping an animal and transporting it across state lines is a different matter.† Hell. I hadn’t thought of that. Luckily Frank had. On top of the dart gun lay documents, all made out and stamped nice and legal, signed by the governor and giving me the right to take pretty much anything anywhere I wanted to. Frank might be an annoying pain, but he was an organized, think-ahead, rich annoying pain with a lot of connections. I handed the papers to Sullivan. Frustration washed over his face. He handed them back to me with a scowl. â€Å"Did you ever tell Adam Ruelle I wanted to talk to him?† â€Å"We already had this conversation.† â€Å"He still hasn’t contacted me.† I shrugged. Adam wasn’t going to call the detective. Not in this lifetime. â€Å"Why did you call me if it wasn’t about Ruelle?† he demanded. I’d forgotten about the call I’d placed, the message I’d left, but I remembered the question I’d had. â€Å"Did you ever identify the man who was strangled in the swamp?† â€Å"No.† â€Å"Isn’t that strange?† Cassandra murmured. â€Å"Shouldn’t someone be searching for him?† â€Å"Eventually. Maybe.† Sullivan shrugged. â€Å"You’d be surprised how many John Does there are in the world. Especially around here. Speaking of which, we never found Charlie Wagner’s body.† I tried very hard not to look at Cassandra. Probably as hard as she was trying not to look at me. The detective glanced back and forth between us. His eyes narrowed. Before he could ask us questions we wouldn’t answer, I asked one of my own. â€Å"The St. Tammany police thought there was a rabies problem in the swamp.† â€Å"There’s something. My boss called in a specialist.† â€Å"What kind of specialist?† â€Å"There’s been a problem in several states with a new strain of rabies.† â€Å"Really?† Cassandra murmured. â€Å"Funny we didn’t hear about it.† â€Å"They try to keep information of that nature quiet. People panic.† â€Å"Can’t imagine why,† I said. â€Å"Guy should be here in a couple days. He’ll do his thing, and then we can concentrate on our other problems.† â€Å"Which are?† â€Å"Who strangled a stranger and who’s stealing dead bodies.† He squinted at Cassandra as he said the latter. She just rolled her eyes and turned away. â€Å"Maybe you should wait to do your trapping until our rabies expert is finished,† he said. â€Å"What if my wolf is the one with the rabies problem?† And I kind of thought he was – if you considered rabies was a euphemism for the curse of the crescent moon. â€Å"Then you’d definitely better back off. You don’t want rabies, Ms. Malone. Even with the new medicines, it isn’t pretty.† Hey, I didn’t want to be baying at the moon, either. I wasn’t going to take any chances. â€Å"You’ll wait until I give the go-ahead before you move forward with†¦ ?† Sullivan made a vague motion toward the cage and the dart gun. â€Å"Of course.† â€Å"Great I’ll be in touch.† The detective climbed into his car and rumbled down the drive toward the highway. Cassandra cleared her throat. When I glanced at her, she lifted a dark brow. â€Å"You really plan to wait?† â€Å"Hell, no.† How to cite Night Creature: Crescent Moon Chapter 28, Essay examples

Ronald Emmerichs The Patriot Essay Example For Students

Ronald Emmerichs The Patriot Essay The Patriot, directed by Roland Emmerich, starring Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger, came out in 2000. This film displayed a historically accurate colonial America during the American Revolution. I chose to watch this film because I have been always interested in war and since the American Revolution was the birth of our nation, I chose to learn more about colonial life by watching The Patriot. The American Revolution (1754- 1781) was the conflict between the colonists in the 13th colonies with their mother country England. This conflict was started from parliament passing a series of taxations on the colonists to pay for the 7 Years War against the French and Native Americans. The war was brutal for the colonists since most of them are just farmers with no experience on military combat. However, some British generals and soldiers who fought in the 7 Years War, helped train the colonists and help them win the war. With the series of raids on the British and the help from the French, allowed them to defeat the British and ear their independence as a new nation. The film, I believe, is a magnificent display of the type of life the colonists had since a farmer, Mel Gibson, dealt with his eldest son in the war and his other son being killed by a British officer. After the death of his son, his house was burned, since he was housing patriots who were wounded. Because of the acts from the soldiers, his rage killed several British troops using his skills from fighting in the 7 Years War. He later leads the colonial militia into many victories against the British using military tactics the British considered cowardly since they hid and shot from the woods behind cover. With the type of cloths and lifestyles expressed in the film gave me the conclusion that productions for the movie did an excellent job making the movie historically accurate even though Hollywood altered the storyline to have a romance and humor to make the movie enjoyable, but didnt alter the historical background of the film. The death of many of the characters in the movie gave me a sense of how devastating the war was and the fact that even though it was in the past, people shall never forget the patriots and how they fought for their beliefs of freedom expressed in the movie. The way the movie showed a simple farmer become a general for the militia was a way to show that the patriots consisted of just mere farmers that were not trained or prepared for battle, but were still able to defeat the force of one of the greatest empires history has seen. The movie may have had historical accuracy be the use of military tactics used by the Patriots or how ex-generals from the British helped the colonists, but Hollywood added a romantic storyline with Heath Ledger and a woman he met traveling from town to town to gain support against the British military. The humor in the movie was from the conversations of the patriots at camps even though they had little food and supplies much like the historical American Revolution since some of the Patriots sadly died from disease and starvation from the limited resources the colonies had for the soldiers. I learned much about the culture not taught from a textbook be the way the colonists were divided from loyalists and patriots and how the British didnt show mercy to those who were against them. I also learned many of the tactics that allowed the Americans to win many battles and eventually win the war. Over all, I believe The Patriot was an excellent film that was historically accurate and a joy to watch.

Professionals Write My Essay I Prioritize My Time

Reviews matter when looking to have an essay writing service write my essay for me. The Quality of Essay Help is Crucial There are many reasons people seek to buy custom writings. Those times when a customer is in a rush to meet an immediate deadline are not uncommon, and this sort of rapid response to emergency situations is possible, however planning ahead to make use of a paper writing service offers a lot of advantages. The least of these is not that I can’t expect someone to write my essay cheap if I am ordering it at the last moment. I think that one of the most significant advantages is that I can spend time reading the reviews to make a decision about the online writing service and the individual writers who most consistently produce the best essays without trouble or complications. If I am going to pay someone to write my essay, I want to know that they are professional and have a track record of being able to research competently and return a genuinely custom written piece of work. Can Someone Write My Essay for Me? In this post, I want to speak personally with you about my experience trying to find a good essay writer, why and how I worked with and why reading feedback made a tremendous difference. As has been the case for many people, the first time I asked someone to write an essay for me I was prompted by an emergency situation. It was my first semester at university, and I completely forgot about one of my papers. I was busy working on two other papers, and I only realized I had a third due three days before the due date. Horrified, I asked some of my friends to help me, but it was no good. Also, it was embarrassing. One of my friends suggested that I pay someone to write my essay online. Beginner's Luck I didn’t have a lot of time to read reviews, but I was very lucky. I stumbled across and they had my assignment written quickly, and it was all so easy. The work was great, and I received a good result. I felt like I was out of the woods and I thought I might try a different service who promised to write my essay cheap in the following semester. This time I had started planning ahead and I had time to spare. I wrote down all of the assignments I would have to do for the study term together with their criteria and decided on which ones I would spend a lot of time on, which ones I would rush and which essays I would buy. The Best Writers aren’t Free Again, I did not read the reviews, but I saw that I could have someone write my essay for me cheap and I gave them a try. This time I was lucky in a different way. I had made my order early in the semester and asked for it to be completed a couple of weeks before the due date. The paper was a complete disaster. I copied a couple of the paragraphs and pasted them into Google and discovered that it was not custom written at all. It had been downloaded from a site which I could have used, and the plagiarism software on campus would have detected this very easily. I learned that trying to find someone to write my essay for me free online was a dangerous short-cut. You Know Your Best Friends When You’re in a Pinch I was fortunate that I had the security of knowing that Essay Service, whom I would pay to write my essay at the last minute again, would get the job done properly. On this occasion, I was pleased to learn that even the extra ten days I gave them to do their essay writing made a noticeable difference in price. Again as before, they returned a genuinely custom essay which had been produced just for me, also I was starting to learn the benefits of planning ahead when I use an agency to help me write my college essay. Setting Up an Ongoing System for Essay Help Find a paper writing service which is reliable and professional. Plan out your workload and make meaningful decisions about what to outsource. Order essays as soon as possible to keep the price down. Leave time to review the work yourself. Focus your efforts on the tasks you have left for yourself. Enjoy your academic experience. I didn’t get anyone to write essays for me in my second year, but then things changed my life significantly. I lost my income, and I had to work. I didn’t have the time which better-funded students had to spend on research and writing because I needed to work to survive. I had tuition, accommodation and living expenses for which I needed to take responsibility. To make things worse, the company I found work with needed me to work a lot. It was all or nothing, and so it turned out that while I needed to work, I couldn’t afford not to pay someone to take off some of the pressure; I needed someone to help me, but I needed it to be affordable. This is where the planning and experimentation I had done in my first and second study terms paid off. Furthermore, I took time at the beginning of the semester to read a lot of reviews and researched which were the best companies whom I could pay to write my essay. I discovered that there were a number of agencies who seemed professional and that there was a considerable difference in pricing and in the process, one needs to undergo in order to buy essays. It was certainly very meaningful for me that I had already had two satisfactory experiences with and I was not surprised to learn, from independent ‘write my essay’ reviews and from the reviews on their site, that others had found they could have confidence in them also. How Using this Essay Writing Service Worked for me. Of course, I can’t get access to the best writers if I expect someone to help me write my essay for free, but I found I could do a lot to get the most out of an ongoing relationship with one company and I could make it very affordable. At the beginning of each study term which followed I carefully laid out the academic workload as though it were a project and I managed the tasks accordingly. I focused on the tasks which I thought were most important, I rushed a couple, and I outsourced a couple to . This way I would give them plenty of time, and it allowed them to write my essay for me cheap. Unexpected Genuine Benefits to Buying Essays There were also some unexpected bonuses to this approach. My interactions with helped me to become a better student, a better writer, and helped me get more out of my course than I otherwise might have. Instead of barely crossing the T's and dotting the I’s while frantically trying to scrape through the criteria, I was able to comfortably engage with the course material and develop my research skills on the assignments I did myself. Also, because I shared work I had written myself with , a writer who would write my college essay for me had the opportunity to better custom their writing to match my style. Another benefit was that by reading through the papers the professional writers had produced for me, I was getting some great ideas about how to adapt my approach to satisfying the criteria and constructing my arguments. It was so encouraging to know that I was not alone under a seemingly insurmountable pile of due dates and criteria. A Professional Essay Service in Your Corner. Confidence in the teams to whom you outsource is crucial, and I have considered myself fortunate to have been able to work with through most of my academic experience. I found that when I planned ahead, I was able to have them write my essay for cheap. However, I was invariably surprised when the rapidly written emergency work, which came at a higher price, consistently came back just as good, especially so when it was produced by a writer who had worked for me previously. If you too need support to get the most out of your student life, I can recommend Essay Service with complete confidence. Sometimes it can make the world of difference if you know where you can go to get a consistent support that you can count on time after time. Also, I strongly suggest that you send them some of your writing so they can truly customize their writing to your own style.

Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. Fast forward a few centuries later and most of the world has already been discovered. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a need for geography anymore, it just means the need for such a field has evolved. A student with a love for geography loves to study the relationship between people and the world they share. This student can find help in selecting the right college by starting with the complete list of universities that offer this degree program we have compiled in this post. Geography has become more than simply traversing an unknown land across the globe and creating a map of said land; it is the study of the interactions between people and their environments and how these interactions overall affect the planet. These environments can be either natural, like the study of climate change, or human, like the study of culture and landscape. At the surface, geography doesn’t appear to hold much promise for a future career. On the contrary, because geography is known as the â€Å"mother of all sciences,† students who pursue this program have a myriad of options from which to choose. Physical geographers study the landscape and how these affect our way of life and how our changes to the landscape affect the earth. Cultural geographers study people’s behaviors in relation to their effects on the environment such as transportation methods and building cities. Political geographers study the global political issues between countries and cultures around the world. A student who studies geography in college will reap the benefits of a well-rounded education. They can expect to learn excellent communication skills, excellent skills in research, and a broadened ability to think critically. In having a geography degree, the world becomes a never-ending pool of learning that can ultimately make a change for the greater good. It’s important to think of a high school transcript and profile like a resume when contacting college admissions officers. They will be looking for a high GPA score and proof that the student is dedicated to learning all that comes with a major in geography. That being said, a student should have excellent grades in natural science, basic math courses, and computer science. Extracurricular activities are also a great way to boost a student’s profile that makes them stand out to college admissions officers. Science fairs and school clubs that are geared toward the student with a heart for geography are excellent choices for making a profile shine. Saving the Environment and the Bottom Line Essay - 1

Saving the Environment and the Bottom Line - Essay Example Environmental Protection Agency which seeks to protect the future of our nations water supply by offering people a simple way to use less water with water-efficient products, new homes and other related services. In this case, a good example can be draw from Xavier Hotel. It can save 15 gallons per person per day implementing various improvements. With our operations including 375 rooms and if it’s occupied 70% of the time with 1.4 people, our yearly annual saving in gallons will be 2,015,895. This means that about $ 115,309.194 is saved a year. In order to purchase water sense labeled products such as toilets, showerheads and sinks from â€Å"www.lowes.com/† it will cost Xavier Hotel approximately $ 134,617.50 for all 375 rooms without any kind of industrial discounts and employee costs. Electricity consumption is a big problem in hospitality business. Guests and other staff members might waste electricity without knowing it. There are a couple of solutions that can be implemented in order to prevent extra electricity usage. For guest rooms, the hotel should use guest room key as an electric power by placing the room card into an electric source so it can save electricity usage while guests are not inside the rooms which is called key activated guest room energy management system. Also, the hotel management could use magnets for windows that is, if windows are open, it can directly turn off the air conditioning system. There are so many guests that leave windows open while they are sleeping and they also do not turn of the air conditioning system without knowing it this can lead to extra consumption of electricity. Hotels also consume electricity in the hallways. Hotel management could place motion sensors in order to prevent electricity usage. So if there is not an yone walking in the hallways, motion detectors can save

Final Response Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Final Response Paper - Essay Example In college writing the readers target to encourage an interesting claim, evidence to the claim as well as the analysis of limits and claim objections. The provision is different from those provided in the secondary level since the secondary level does not prompt utmost rationality and demands for simplicity in their conformation. The synthesis necessary in secondary school writing targets the dummies a converse scenario to the college writing (Sommers 382). Even though many discourses involve writing and reading, some do not involve the outlined practices (Gee 11). Academic writing entails the format, type, and the language. The writing requires the use of formal language throughout to abide by the conventional demands. Under such provisions, the writing discourages the use of short forms of words and abbreviations. The writing has to be in a specific format such as the APA, MLA, Harvard or any other format (Hyland 96). Through the formation of the paper, it has to maintain a type such as an essay, coursework, and dissertation amongst other types as well. The dominant discourse is however contrary to the academic writing since it mostly promotes the passive voice and does not consider formats. Academic writing is different since it also involves instructions that guide all its aspects including the themes to be written about (Sommers 376). The main controversy is the time of engagement into the discourses and the effectiveness of their impacts. There is a group of students considered â€Å"special† in this aspect and cannot be compared to those who get engaged in discourse at tender ages (Gee, 14). Another trouble around teaching academic writing is the conflict of the daily experiences in communication and the requirements of academic writing. The common language and communication tends to be informal and appears not to abide by the demands of academic writing.

Truman Show Essay Example for Free

Truman Show Essay Society watches and is attracted to these shows because they are supposed to relate to ordinary people’s lives. Even though it appears that their real lives are playing out on television, it is not as real as it seems when compared to people’s â€Å"real† lives. These â€Å"actors† have nothing to fear. They have security guards surrounding them when filming the show. They do not have to pay for anything because the company pays for their needs and wants. The director cuts and edits the clips to show the adience how he wants the actors’ lives and show to appear. The only difference between the reality shows of today and the Truman show is that Truman was not aware that he was part of a show. In today’s reality shows, the actors are very aware of their surroundings and display behavior that will make the shows more amusing to their audience. Truman’s world was in a way almost a â€Å"utopia† with no worries and no fear. It was, however, repetitive. Every day was the same. There were no difficult choices to make; much like reality television is portrayed today. The decisions they make and the outcomes do not truly reflect what would happen if an ordinary person does the same. The actors in today’s reality television have welcomed the public eye to see everything they are doing, but this isn’t true for everyone in society. While the rest of the society hasn’t invited anyone to track their actions, government and other organizations are already doing this in many ways. These groups have the ability to put up surveillance cameras to track when people are in different locations. They can track internet, credit card and cell phone usage. When traveling by a cell tower, for example, the tower stores the location information in a database. It is ready to be revealed to any government official when solicited (ACLU). Purchases can be tracked, along with, vacations, hotel stays, etc. According to an article written by Daniel J. Solove, for The Chronicle of Higher Education, the most common response to privacy advocates is â€Å"Only if you’re doing something wrong should you worry, and then you don’t deserve to keep it private. † (cite ). The problem with the government collecting private information goes beyond someone doing right or wrong. Some of the problems resulting from collecting and using personal data include the fact that people do not know that this data is being collected about them. They cannot fix an issue if they do not know this technology exists. Another problem with government gathering and using personal data is the distortion of the data. It often fails to reflect the whole person and can paint an untrue picture (Chronicle). Privacy is not typically lost with one major action, but it occurs over time with many pieces of information being collected and used to make assumptions about a person. The question is can it be stopped? The best way to slow down the invasion of privacy is to be careful of the information a person is freely giving out, especially on the internet. Information provided in emails, Facebook, on-line shopping sites, use of credit-cards, or completing surveys for a â€Å"free-gift† all contribute to an ongoing database of personal information. Consumers can continue to express their opinions with government representatives on how this personal information is collected and used. Those who want an increase in privacy should encourage the policy makers to look at the spending programs, regulatory agencies, privacy-invading regulations and investigative agencies for influence (Privacilla). The Truman show portrays the government or â€Å"creator† as having all personal information of Truman and is able to influence and control his entire life. This is not a future that society wishes to imitate. Bibliography ACLU. American Civil Liberties Union. American Civil Liberties Union. ACLU, n. d. Web. 12 May 2013. Privacilla. Creationism vs. Evolution Essay -- essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Where we come from is a question as old as mankind itself. There are countless numbers of religions, each with their own twist on the origins of earth and mankind, but one of the most highly visible debates would be creationism vs. evolution. Depending on where your beliefs lie, the Earth has been around somewhere in the neighborhood of 6,000 years to 4.5 billion years. One would tend to believe that this vast difference in time would make it impossible to have 2 â€Å"theories† that are so widely accepted. However this debate gives you just that. Each argument has its variations, however it comes down to either God created the Earth and all things in it as they are now or that life today has evolved from a single one-celled organism.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  According to Genesis God created the Earth and all things in it in 7 days (actually six days and one day for a little R&R). There are within the belief wide ranges of explanations for the scientific discoveries in modern times. In 2000 the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) created a committee to study the first three chapters of the Book of Genesis. What they found were 4 different views of creation days within their group. The first view is that God created the world in 6 consecutive days, with each day being a normal Earth calendar day (24 hours), any geological formations seen today (such as sedimentary rock formations with ten’s of thousands of years of different layers) are said to have come from the Flood in Noah’s time. The most generally accepted date of the creation of the Earth was October 22, 4004 B.C.E. Certain groups such as and especially Christian fundamentalists who believe in the inerrancy and literal interpretation of the Bible a re the main subscribers of this train of thought. One example of how this would be possible even when scientific evidence suggest that the Earth is far older then 6,000 years is that when God created things, he created them with a history. Trees would have been created already containing rings. New mountains would appear already eroded. In short, the world would appear much older then it actually is. Other examples such as the â€Å"Gap Theory† states that the days were in fact 24-hour periods, however there were large gaps of time between each one of them, enough time to accommodate many geological ages. The second view is th... ...tionism. Arkansas wanted equal time for evolution and creationism, while Louisiana was looking for either both be taught or neither. These laws were met with great resistance and were later deemed unconstitutional under the 1st amendment. In an ironical turn of events fundamentalist and evangelical Christians are now trying to get creationism back into the lesson plans of the science department, a total 180 from just 2 decades ago.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The evidence supporting evolution continues to increase, and someday we may be able to prove without a doubt that mankind developed from a more primitive species. Some fundamentalist groups though may never update their way of thinking no matter what science is able to prove, however, in my opinion, the vast majority of the â€Å"developed† world, will eventually make their way to a theistic evolutionary outlook. The combination of science and religion will offer someone the gift of knowledge with the piece of mind of knowing there is some guiding force, and not just some natural process without a specific goal. Albert Einstein said it best when he said, â€Å"Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.†

Modern Frankenstein Essay

In today’s society there are many people that could be considered as ‘modern Frankensteins’. Scientists have made it possible for us to choose the sex of our child by gender selection, clone sheep-remember Dolly the Sheep? And of course, let us not forget the huge growth in cosmetic surgery. Have today’s scientist’s, like Frankenstein, gone too far in trying to create the perfect human? The following video charts Michael Jackson’s ever increasing cosmetic surgeries. This world renowned superstar wanted to have the ‘perfect’ face and science made this possible. But did they go too far? Based on this video and the text, is there a danger in wanting to achieve ‘perfection’? Do these forms illuminate the dangers of becoming ‘Godlike’ by changing your physical appearance (which is God given) and by creating life? Is Michael Jackson now the ‘modern monster’? He like Frankenstein’s Monster is isolated and not understood because of his frightening and grotesque appearance, but there is the underlying need for acceptance in a society that is very much focused on looks. Whilst you’re watching this video I want you to think about the following things and be able to complete the attached questionnaire. Parallels that can be drawn between Frankenstein and today’s scientists: Both are actively playing with life. Both wanting to achieve the ideal. Parallels between Michael and the Monster The Monster was created to be an ‘angel’ but his appearance did not match his personality. Frankenstein made a gross oversight by not making his creation look angelic, and as a result, he was marginalised, hated, feared, abused, taunted and unloved by society. Similarly, Michael has made himself a social outcast and extremely isolated by having too much cosmetic surgery. Both are products of maybe the extremes of the successful advances in science-science used in the wrong way but for good reasons. It is said on the video of Michael Jackson’s father Joe Jackson ‘that he wanted to create the right thing but did this in the wrong way. ‘ Much like Frankenstein. Both Michael Jackson and The Monster are concerned with acceptance. They have an overwhelming need for this because both want a life filled with peace, love and kindness, yet because of the way they look, this is almost impossible. Would you consider Michael Jackson to be a Monster based on his appearance? Would you consider Frankenstein’s Monster as a monster based on our understanding of what a Monster is and on what you have read? Do you have any sympathy for the Monster because he found it difficult to be kind and loving because he was met with so much hate because of how he looked? Do you think that the cosmetic surgeon who worked on Michael Jackson went too far? Is being a Monster based on one’s appearance or one’s personality? Think about comparing The Monster or Michael Jackson to someone like Hitler who did monstrous things? Think about whether you judge people based on their looks? Have you ever misjudged someone by doing this? Questions Show preview only The above preview is unformatted text This student written piece of work is one of many that can be found in our GCSE Mary Shelley section.

Life in ancient Greece and medieval Europe

This essay briefly compares and contrasts a few salient features of life in ancient Greece and  medieval Europe. Familiarities The life in ancient Greece and during the middle age in Europe has tremendous impact on our  lives today also. The effect of the ancient Greek lifestyle is direct and that of the middle age  Europe is indirect.   The ancient Greeks have gifted to us system of governance like ‘democracy’  and the master event of all masculine sports: the Olympic games. On the other hand, the  life style of middle age, gave rise to the age of new thinking, the renaissance. It was during the  middle age that intellectuals started their quest for knowledge, which led to an upsurge or  intellectual activities later. It was during the middle age that schools and Universities started  being established across Europe. These gave rise to centers of learning during the renaissance  period, later.( Daily life in ancient   Greece, life ). While studying the life style of ancient Greeks and the people of middle age Europe, one  more familiarity that strikes the reader is that in both the cases, considerable stress was laid on  education of children.   In ancient Greece, children were educated at primary level at home  mostly by the male slaves. The way education was imparted in the medieval period was slightly  different. Schools had already come into existence, and concept of language, math and science  had started developing slowly.( daily life in ancient Greece, life ). Both the ages have given memorable gifts to mankind. The ancient Greeks have given us  1)   trial by jury, 2)   the Greek mythology, 3) democracy,   and   4) recreational activity like  dramatics, while the middle age has opened the doors for establishment of schools for primary  level and universities for the higher level education. The invention of Guttenberg’s printing  press, is the greatest gift from the middle age to mankind. The forts and structures built by the  rulers for protection of citizens and worship of God, during these ages, are remarkable pieces of  architecture.( daily life in ancient Greece, history ) Contrasts The ancient Greek era is timed up to5th century B.C. while the medieval European age is  timed from 4th century A.D. to the 14th century A.D. Life in ancient Greece marked   the  development of one of the civilizations on this world, while life during the middle age is also  known as a dark age, because of the downfall of activities in almost all spheres of life.( daily life  in ancient Greece, life ) The biggest contrast between the two is that slavery existed in ancient Greece whereas it had  no traces in the middle age Europe. Male and female slaves lived miserable lives and were  treated like commodities by their owners. They did not even have a right to have their own name.  Slavery was so prominent in ancient Greece that there were as many slaves as the number of  citizens in ancient Greece. The Greek civilization spread over a small geographic area whereas the middle age Europe  encompasses the whole of the continent. Despite the fall of the Roman empire, the Catholic  church was the sole centralized authority to impress upon the rulers of all countries. In contrast,  the ruling system in ancient Greece was heavily decentralized. In   ancient Greece, there existed  a system of city-states. Each city was a state, governed independently. Athens, Sparta, Corinth, Argus and Megara were the main city- states. ( Daily life in ancient   Greece, life )  The similarities between the life in ancient Greece and in the medieval Europe are few,  whereas the contrasts are too many, and too prominent also. Ask These 10 Interview Questions to Impress Your Hiring Manager

Ask These 10 Interview Questions to Impress Your Hiring Manager You hear a lot about what not to say at an interview these days. But ever wonder if there’s anything they’re specifically looking for you to say? Figure out how to answer the dreaded, â€Å"Do you have any questions for us?† question with aplomb by considering a few of these gems. 1. â€Å"How does this position contribute to your goals for this department/company?†Bang! You’re mindful of the fact that your role will be a part of a larger whole. You’re forward thinking enough to wonder how you can contribute. And you’re sensitive enough to the company’s goals to see how it fits into their big picture or bottom line. Bonus points if you can flip the question: just name a few of the goals for the company you already know line up with this position and then ask how else a new hire in that position might contribute or accelerate that impact?2. â€Å"What do your most successful hires usually do in their first month with you?† You’re not just going to get the job and slouch into complacency. You’re there to slay. This shows you want to hit the ground running- and that you’re eager to help. As a bonus, you might get some insight into the company’s as-yet-unknown quirks.3. â€Å"How would you measure success in this role?†The interview is actually the prime time to ask this question. Again, it shows your forward thinking and your desire to excel and exceed their expectations. It also gives you a great blueprint for how to render yourself an asset as quickly as possible- much better than a vague idea of the tasks required and the typical workload.4. â€Å"What recent accomplishments have meant the most to you and your team, and why?†Bonus points if you can cite some of these accomplishments, or have done enough research to say there have been many. This question allows you to show off your excellent listening skills. Look! It’s not all about you! You’re a great and generous colleague! Plus, people love to talk about themselves. It’s a great icebreaker, even for midway or almost-all-the-way through an interview.5. â€Å"What opportunities are there for professional development?†Doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be comfortable or happy in the position offered. But does mean that you’re hungry. That you would be willing to work up in the company. And that they might be hiring someone who will go the distance with them. Try to emphasize your enthusiasm about the company itself.6. â€Å"What are some biggest challenges that might need to be faced?†Whether you ask about the team’s challenges- i.e. recent challenges they may have faced and how they handled them- or about obstacles or roadblocks that might come up for you in your new position, this shows that you’ve got your eyes open and are ready to troubleshoot and make sure you transition in and start succeeding without running into any foreseeable hurdles.7. â€Å"What do you love about this company?†This one could be framed as: â€Å"Why did you decide to work here?† or even â€Å"You’ve been at this company a while, what keeps you motivated by being here?† You can learn a lot about the company culture as well as its structure this way. Plus, it gives you a break from talking about yourself.8. â€Å"What is your client service philosophy?†Really, you should try to ascertain this before the interview. But there are ways to ask about this that make you seem customer service oriented and proactive. As well as sensitive to balancing your company’s needs versus that of your client.9. â€Å"Do you have any questions or concerns about my experience?†Seems like cheating. But it’s a great way to give yourself a moment to explain any holes in your resume or further justify the ways in which you might meet the listed job requirements. It’s a great way t o give one last defense of yourself before the decisions are made. And, who knows, you could just assuage someone’s concerns enough to make them hire you.10. â€Å"What are some of the intangible qualities of successful team members here?†You want to know what that certain je ne sais quoi might be that helps employees of this company excel. Your interviewer might be eager to talk about the soft skills involved in the job- which are rarely asked about in interviews. It’s also a great sneaky way to get a sense of culture and what the company will value most to see if you’d be a good or bad fit.

SUMMARY In naming female CEO, IBM passes gender milestone Essay

SUMMARY In naming female CEO, IBM passes gender milestone - Essay Example Rometty has been with IBM since 1981, and has swiftly moved up the ladder to occupy the role as chief of sales and marketing after serving in a variety of other roles and responsibilities within IBM. Rometty is compared with other women CEOs like Meg Whitman of HP and Ursula Burns of Xerox who have been instrumental in taking their respective organizations to the positions that they currently hold in the market. About Rometty, she is described as a transformational leader that proved her mettle and capabilities through critical decisions in terms of business sustenance, growth and expansion, which helped taking IBM to stronger competitive positions in the market. However, perceptions about women heading businesses and their capabilities still seem to linger in people’s mind. Robertson gives many examplesin this article to prove this point. For instance, Palmisano’s decision to stay back as the chairperson somewhat shows a picture about his total confidence in Rometty’s capabilities to take over as CEO; secondly, the sudden decline in IBM’s shares following announcement of Rometty as the CEO is indicative of stakeholders’ perception of women leaders. Both these lead to the paradoxical state attached to women leaders in contemporary

HR Training class Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

HR Training class - Essay Example e management must evaluate; who needs the training, where the training should happen, when the training will happen, why the training should happen, as well as, how it would happen. To accomplish this, the management must conduct analysis-using information that relates to the organizational goals and objectives, jobs and other tasks, which the employees need to learn, competences that the employees must possess to execute their duties effectively, as well as, the employees that the human resource should train. An effective needs assessment, program would help the management to direct resources to the areas that have the greatest demand. The needs assessment, program should help in addressing the needed resources as far as customer service is concerned. It should as well help in evaluating the needed resources as far as enhancing productivity, achievement of organizational goals, as well as, improvement of the quality of goods and services are concerned. A needs assessment in customer service entails identifying the gap between what the human resource expects from the employees and the actual performance, as far as customer service is concerned. Needs and assess ment, therefore, helps in closing the gap. The assessment within the small retail business would include three levels, which this paper will justify their need. The first level is organizational assessment. Organizational assessment determines the current performance of the organization, as far as, offering quality services to the customers is concerned. The assessment will help in identifying if the employees possess the right skills, abilities, knowledge or competencies in customer service. The assessment helps in solving problems present in customer service. Different businesses have different customer service needs. For example, a manufacturing company would have different customer service needs compared to a retail business. This reflects the importance of assessing the needs. In other words, it would
